Marie Monsen, a single Lutheran missionary from Norway, was the unlikely vessel used by God to bring powerful revival to many parts of China in the s and s. Such was the impact of this softly spoken woman that today, many believers in China respectfully call her the 'mother of the house churches'. We hope you will be challenged by her testimony and message, which is desperately needed in the Church around the world today.

The Norwegian Lutheran China Mission sent ten new missionaries to China in –02 to reinforce their work. One of the new recruits was a single woman named Marie Monsen. Nobody would have believed that this small, humble figure would have such an impact over the next 30 years.

She committed as a young woman to going to China and arrived for a year mission there on September 1, Her first years there are said to be disastrous. She received a concussion after falling and being unconscious shortly after her arrival, this would lead to years of debilitating headaches and trouble learning the language. She also had bouts of malaria and chronic dysentery in which the doctors gave her little chance of survival. However in time she was healed, learned the culture, and participated in &#;dramatic prayer and healing sessions&#;.

&#;Marie went from city to city in China asking a simple question: “Have you been born again?” She would ask seekers and pastors and missionaries—no one was off limits. The Spirit would work through her piercing question and melt cold hearts, revealing hidden sin and calling people to surrender everything to Jesus.&#;

Norwegian missionary in China
Monsen was a catalyst for the Shantung revival of the early s. She had had an apparently disastrous first trip to China soon after ; then in , she came to Nanyangfu, Honan (Henan) Province, with the Norwegian Lutheran Mission. When missionaries fled the interior of China in late and early , she visited missions in Manchuria, then went to Chefoo (Yantai), Shantung (Shandong) Province. There she met U.S. Southern Baptist missionaries and participated in some dramatic prayer and healing sessions. She returned to Shantung in late or , and this visit helped to spark a province-wide revival that soon included the U.S. Southern Baptists, Presbyterians, and others. It also influenced a more openly Pentecostal native Chinese “spiritual gifts” revival movement.
Monsen seems to have been a quasi-Pentecostal, stressing the baptism or fullness of the Holy Spirit in addition to an initial conversion experience, and her meetings were emotional if not disorderly. On a remote slope overlooking Sandviken, Norway (located north of Bergen) there was an unmarked grave whose ground marker was so overgrown with grass and soil, it could hardly be read. This marked the grave of Marie Monsen (), a young lady whom the western world has forgotten, but well-remembered by millions in China as the Mother of the House Churches.
