Larsen & Toubro ropes in GSK India's Hasit Joshipura to head corporate initiatives
Joshipura’s appointment surprised many at L&T and even outside, given that most of his 33 years of work experience were in consumer related businesses. But three people in the know told ET that L&T chairman Naik handpicked him to assist him in strategic and corporate planning after working closely with him at IIM Ahmedabad (IIM-A).
Naik, as chairman of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, and Joshipura as a marketing faculty at IIM were part of the selection committee for the director’s post for IIM-A, which managed to lure Harvard professor Ashish Nandato join the Indian institute. BHB, the governing authority for the British horseracing industry, owned a database of fixture lists and other racing information &#; in particular final official lists of runners and riders. William Hill bookmakers were licenced to use that information in its betting shops only. When William Hill began to use the data on their website, the Claimants issued proceedings for infringement of their database rights. In , the UK Court of Appeal had referred a number of questions to the ECJ about the interpretation of the Database Directive. The ECJ gave judgment on [] RPC and the case was remitted back to the Court of Appeal for determination in the light of that ruling.

A History of William Hill
For many this is the first name in gambling: Growing up in the days before the arrival of the Internet, William Hill betting shops were prevalent on British High Streets and those of a certain age who still like to bet online would have almost certainly used one of their shops at some point.
They aren’t necessarily the oldest bookmaker still in existence but their history stretches back over 80 years so how did it all began and how did they become the respected brand that we all know today?
Beginnings: to ’s
The company was founded in by a Mr William Hill himself and in the days before the industry was fully legalised, the official history states that it was set up as a telephone and postal service only and certainly that would have been a main focus of the operation at that time.
William Hill, like many of his contemporaries, started out in bookmaking at a young age and while working as an apprentice at the BSA motorcycle factory during World War I, he would drive around and collect bets on his bike.

The man behind the brand, Mr William Hill himself, started taking bets as early as , but it was in that he opened his first licensed betting shop.
This led to the exponential growth of the famous high street bookie that we see on the streets of the UK today, as through various buyouts of smaller bookmakers Hill’s retail portfolio grew to giant proportions.
These days the company is multi-national, and relies as heavily on online business as it does on the traditional retail side of things, with ambitions to take this much further in the future.
The purchase of Mr Green online casino is a case in point. Having previously adopted a growth strategy of acquiring physical businesses they could rebrand as William Hill, Mr Green represents the first acquisition made based on the strength of the brand itself.
However, any plans the company had to continue in this way have been shelved.
Their recent takeover by Caesars, who sold the European assets to , means that William Hill is now at a turning point in its’ history. It is no longer in control of its own destiny, now being a brand that is part of a larger group rather than a brand being run independently.
