On Sept. 7, , the world lost one of its most unique children when Keith Moon left us, far too soon. Much more than simply the drummer for the Who, Moon defiined the term one of a kind not only in his ability and style behind the drum kit, but in his utter irreverence and over the top way of life.
Moon was born on August 23, By the time he was in his teens, was already turning heads as a drummer. His joining the Who was nothing short of perfect. He added a much needed component to their equation as he was often the comic foil to the often very serious Pete Townshend. Moons drumming style seemed to border on pure chaos, but in reality he was always firmly in control behind the wheel.
And what a ride! Unlike the subtle, yet effective, approach of contemporaries like Charlie Watts or the rock solid Ringo Starr, Moon took an entirely different sensibility to the drum kit, inspiring countless future musicians along the way. Add in bassist extraordinaire John Entwistle, and the Who had themselves a rhythm section with the range of an orchestra.
Moons short, sweet life came to and end after a night of partying and to be fair, a lifetime of testing
What really happened the night Keith Moon died?
The real Keith Moon was a son, a brother, a father and an insecure man. The public Keith Moon was The Who’s manic drummer and hellraising, daredevil comedian; a man who only ever lived in the moment. And it was this version of Keith Moon that led to his untimely death on September 7
A month earlier, The Who released Who Are You, their first new album in three years. But Keith’s drinking and drug taking had impacted on his performance and his appearance. Moon’s playing was erratic and unreliable, and he was made to pose Christine Keeler-style for the cover photograph so as to conceal a paunch. Keith’s condition meant The Who were in no state to tour, which left him anxious and depressed.
Moon had been taking Heminevrin for some time. It was a powerful sedative prescribed to him by Harley Street physician, Dr Geoffrey Dymond. Heminevrin quelled the craving for alcohol, but sometimes left users in a docile and forgetful state. But it worked. In the days leading up to his death, Moon cut back on the booze.

My Generation by The Who

The Who released an impressive debut album in December with My Generation. Although the group was initially dissatisfied with the album, it has grown in the past half century to be regarded as one of the pivotal rock albums of the mid sixties. With most songs composed by guitarist, Pete Townshend, along with a few select blues and funk covers, the album features a raw, hard rock sound and approach which may have been heavier than any on any popular rock album up to that point in time.
Townshend grew up in a musical family outside London and met future bandmates, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle in grammar school. Daltrey, who was a year older than the others, started the group The Detours in and soon recruited Entwistle into the band on bass. Although Daltrey played guitar originally, in Entwistle suggested Townshend be hired as guitarist with Daltrey moving to lead vocals. In early , the group changed their name to The Who and brought on drummer Keith Moon to round out the classic quartet.
Over the next year plus, The Who toured relentlessly and became a favorite band of the English mod movement. The group
Keith John Moon (23 August – 7 September ) was an English drummer for the rock band the Who. He was noted for his unique style of playing and his eccentric, often self-destructive behaviour.
Moon grew up in Alperton, a suburb of Wembley, in Middlesex, United Kingdom, and took up the drums during the early s. After playing with a local band, the Beachcombers, he joined the Who in before they recorded their first single. Moon was recognised for his drumming style, which emphasised tom-toms, cymbal crashes, and drum fills. Throughout Moons tenure with the Who, his drum kit steadily grew in size, and (along with Ginger Baker) he has been credited as one of the earliest rock drummers to regularly employ double bass drums in his setup. Moon occasionally collaborated with other musicians and later appeared in films, but considered playing in the Who his primary occupation, and remained a member of the band until his death. In addition to his talent as a drummer, Moon developed a reputation for smashing his kit on stage and destroying hotel rooms on tour. He was fascinated with blowing up toilets with cherry bombs or dynamite, and destroying television sets. Moon enjoyed touri
