The subject of this sketch, D. W. Whittle, was born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, [United States], November 22, He was named for the statesman whom his father greatly admired &#; Daniel Webster. There were three other boys in the family and before the outbreak of the war they had all joined the crowds of young men who were leaving New England for the Western states and had settled in Chicago. Mr. Whittle went into the Wells Fargo Bank as cashier. He soon became interested in the Tabernacle Sunday-school, the largest in the city, and in the course of time became its superintendent.
It would be hard to say just when he experienced his first deep interest in religious things; born of a sweet and lovely Christian mother, he probably learned while still a child what God's love and grace in the heart may mean; but it was characteristic of him that he made a definite surrender at a definite time of his heart and life to God. Daniel Webster Whittle (–) was born in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. His family moved to Chicago and he began work at Wells Fargo Bank and was superintendent of the Tabernacle Sunday-School. He married Abbie Hanson whom he met at the Sunday-school. He served in the Union Army and fought with General Sherman at Vicksburg. He suffered a wound in his arm, and being discharged he worked for the Elgin Watch Company. He met D. L. Moody and was eventually convinced to do itinerant evangelistic work. Major Whittle was the speaker and Philip P. Bliss was the singer. He also worked with James P. McGranahan and George C. Stebbins. His daughter, May, married D. L. Moody’s son, William. He wrote over hymn lyrics. He is known for the hymns “Hold the Fort,” “Moment by Moment,” “I Know Whom I have Believed,” “There Shall be Showers of Blessings,” “The Banner of the Cross.”
