Georgios Karaiskakis, born Georgios Karaiskos, was a Greek military, patriot.

Karaiskakis was born in a monastery near the village of Skoulikaria close to Arta in

Career

During the earlier stages of the war he served in the Morea, and had a somewhat discreditable share in the intrigues which divided the Greek leaders.

His most honourable services were performed in the middle and later stages of the war. He helped to raise the first siege of Missolonghi in , and did his best to save the town in the second siege in In that year he commanded the patriot forces in Rumelia, and though he failed to co-operate effectually with other chiefs, or with the foreign sympathizers fighting for the Greeks, he gained some successes against the Turks which were very welcome amid the disasters of the time. He took a share in the unsuccessful attempts to raise the siege of Athens in , and made an effort to prevent the disastrous massacre of the Turkish garrison of fort S Spiridion. He was shot in action on the 4th of May

    Georgios Karaiskakis: A Rebellious Greek Leader

    Early Life and Rise to Prominence

    Georgios Karaiskakis was born into a family of Greek militia leaders (armatoloi) serving the Ottoman Empire. Growing up amidst armed bands (klephts), he developed a keen sense of leadership and a deep-seated desire for Greek independence. At the age of 15, he was captured by Ali Pasha of Yanina, who recognized his potential and appointed him commander of a bodyguard unit. However, after falling out of favor, Karaiskakis fled to the mountains, where he reestablished himself as a leader of armed militiamen.

    When the Greek War of Independence broke out in , Karaiskakis joined the rebels and quickly rose through the ranks, distinguishing himself as a skilled military commander.      Ο Γεώργιος Καραϊσκάκης γεννήθηκε στις 23 Ιανουαρίου (ή ) στο Μαυρομάτι Καρδίτσας και ήταν καρπός της σχέσης του αρματολού Δημήτρη Καραΐσκου και της μοναχής Ζωής Ντιμισκή, αδελφής του κλέφτη Κώστα Ντιμισκή και εξαδέλφης του οπλαρχηγού Γώγου Μπακόλα. Μεγάλωσε με τους θετούς γονείς του, μία οικογένεια Σαρακατσάνων, αφού η μητέρα του τον εγκατέλειψε μη αντέχοντας τον διασυρμό μιας παράνομης σχέσης και πέθανε όταν ήταν οκτώ ετών. Από τη μητέρα του, ο «γιος της καλογριάς» κληρονόμησε τον ανυπότακτο χαρακτήρα του και την παροιμιώδη βωμολοχία του.

    Στα 15 του ο Γεώργιος Καραϊσκάκης εγκαταλείπει τους θετούς του γονείς και σχηματίζει κλέφτικη ομάδα από συνομηλίκους του. Τρία χρόνια αργότερα πέφτει στα χέρια του Αλή Πασά, ο οποίος εκτιμώντας τον ισχυρό του χαρακτήρα τον προσλαμβάνει στη σωματοφυλακή του. Στην Αυλή των Ιωαννίνων όχι μόνο έμαθε τη στρατιωτική τέχνη, αλλά και στοιχειώδη γράμματα, γραφή και ανάγνωση.

    Γεννήθηκε τo , νόθος γιος της Ζωής Διμισκή ή Ντιμισκή, από τη Σκουληκαριά, πρώτης εξαδέλφης του αρματολού των Ραδοβυζίων Γώγου Μπακόλα. Η μητέρα του, μετά τον θάνατο του Ιωάννη Μαυρομματιώτη, που ήταν ο πρώτος σύζυγός της, έγινε καλόγρια Για την ταυτότητα του πατέρα του δεν υπάρχει βεβαιότητα. Θεωρείται πιθανότερο ότι ήταν ο αρματολός του Βάλτου Δημήτριος Καραΐσκος.

    Δεν είναι απολύτως εξακριβωμένος ο τόπος γέννησης του Καραϊσκάκη . Οι πρώτοι του βιογράφοι είτε δεν αναγράφουν τον τόπο γέννησης, είτε αναφέρουν διαφορετικές περιοχές όπως ότι γεννήθηκε σε σπηλιά πλησίον του χωριού Μαυρομμάτι Καρδίτσας ή σε μοναστήρι στη Σκουληκαριά Άρτας Η επιτροπή που συνέστησε το Υπουργείο Εσωτερικών το , προκειμένου να επιλύσει το θέμα της γενέτειράς του, κατέληξε στην επίσημη αναγόρευση του Μαυρομματίου ως γενέτειρας του Καραϊσκάκη. Παρ' όλα αυτά , στα πλαίσια του σχεδίου Καποδίστριας, αποφασίστηκε να δοθεί το όνομα «Γεώργιος Καραϊσκάκης» στον νεοσύστατο δήμο του νομού Άρτας στον οποίο υπάγεται έως σήμερα η Σκουληκαριά και το με Προεδρικό διάταγμα καθιερώθηκε επίσημα στη Σκουληκαριά Άρτας δημόσια εορτή τοπικής σημασίας προς τιμή του Γεωργίου Καραϊσκ
