Ludwig & Ludwig, the home of the Ludwig Black Beauty snare, was formed in by brothers William F. and Theo Ludwig. The brothers began their innovative designing in a simple Chicago garage, with their first innovation being a bass drum pedal that was faster and far superior to anything available at the time.
In the brothers came up with the spring action that was to become the basis for the current Balanced Action Pedal Timpani.
In the mid &#;s the brothers became famous for making some of the worlds finest ukulele-banjos, still prized amongst collectors today.
When the great depression of the &#;s hit, the company merged with the C.G. Conn Company, but William wasn&#;t happy with the new structure and left in , forming his own company, the W.F.L. Drum Company, with the famous Speed King Pedal being one of the first products designed, which is still manufactured by Ludwig today.
Ludwig was purchased back from Conn in and relaunched as the Ludwig Drum Company.
The new company struggled for almost 10 years, until when an emerging band from Liverpool, The Beatles, chanced upon a kit in a London store window. The band were walking through London, when Ringo spotted the kit an

As the only living Ludwig in the drum business today, Bill Ludwig III (B3 to many of his friends) is bringing back the craftsmanship and legacy of America’s First Family of drum building.
Starting in with little more than a dream and the experience of over sixty years in the industry, Bill III set out to redesign the classic drums of his family’s past using traditional processes for modern drummers.
In the Beginning
William F Ludwig Sr. founded Ludwig & Ludwig™ in with his brother Theobald. The company’s first major product was the bass drum pedal, invented by the brothers, drummers themselves, to meet the increasing needs of drummers worldwide.
By the s, the company had become the largest drum company in the world. The end of the ’s was a turbulent time for not only the music industry but the country as well. The country was entering what would become the worst depression in its history and the new advent of “talking movies” was putting theater drummers out of work.

William F. Ludwig, noted percussion manufacturer, percussionist, and inventor of the balanced-action timpani, began playing drums when his family moved to Chicago in His career led him to play concerts, operas, dances, shows, and circuses, most notably with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Arthur Pryor’s Band, Chicago Grand Opera and Chicago Civic Grand Opera, and the Chicago Symphony. He experimented with his percussion equipment, invented the first efficient bass drum pedal, and, in , formed the Ludwig & Ludwig company with his brother, Theobald. The increasing work of manufacturing ultimately led him to give up playing, and his company expanded to become the largest percussion manufacturer in the world. He wrote method books, solos, ensemble, and articles. Throughout his life, Ludwig continued to perform in amateur groups, instruct drum and bugle corps, and judge contests.
