Charlemagne: A Biography

April 26,
This one gets 2 Stars only because I did actually learn something: peripatetic: traveling from place to place, especially working or based in various places for relatively short periods and capitulary: a civil or ecclesiastical ordinance. The guy used these like he was getting paid on how many times he could squeeze one in. He should be charged with misleading advertising. This was barely a bio of Charlemagneit was more a thesis on how Europe came to be an idea that would wind up as the EU. Charles the Great only comes in for about 1/2 the book. His life, campaigns, policies, travels, etc. were not covered in the level of detail I was looking for or expecting. That said, the book isn't bad. He admits a lack of info on Charlemagne and proceeds to speculate on many parts of his life and actions. He traces the legend of Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Emperor as a force in the history. This was educational but too shallow as he covers years of European history up to establishing the EU. His style is a bit scatterbrained as he jumped around in history rapidlyone moment we are at year and suddenly back to He is also a snide British academi

Charlemagne (c. - c. )

Charlemagne  ©Charlemagne (Charles the Great) was king of the Franks and Christian emperor of the West. He did much to define the shape and character of medieval Europe and presided over the Carolingian Renaissance.

Charlemagne was born in the late s near Liège in modern day Belgium, the son of the Frankish king Pepin the Short. When Pepin died in , his kingdom was divided between his two sons and for three years Charlemagne ruled with his younger brother Carloman. When Carloman died suddenly in , Charlemagne became sole ruler.

Charlemagne spent the early part of his reign on several military campaigns to expand his kingdom. He invaded Saxony in and eventually achieved its total conquest and conversion to Christianity. He also extended his dominance to the south, conquering the kingdom of the Lombards in northern Italy. In , he invaded northern Spain, then controlled by the Moors. Between and , Charlemagne added Bohemia to his empire and subdued the Avars in the middle Danube basin to form a buffer state for the eastern border of his empire.

In a rebellion against Pope Leo III began. Charlemagne went to his aid in Rome and defeated the rebellio

Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, King of the Franks (), was a strong leader who unified Western Europe through military power and the blessing of the Church.  His belief in the need for education among the Frankish people was to bring about religious, political, and educational reforms that would change the history of Europe.

Charlemagne was born in at Aachen, the son of Pepin(or Pippin) the Short and grandson of Charles Martel.  His grandfather, Charles, had begun the process of unifying Western Europe, in the belief that all people should be Christian.  Charlemagne&#;s father, Pepin, continued this process throughout his rule and passed his beliefs on to Charlemagne.  All three, in addition to the political unification, believed that the church should be reformed and reorganized under the Pope, which helped their rise to power as the Carolingian Dynasty. (Holmes 74)

Upon Pepin&#;s death in , Charlemagne and his brother, Carloman, each inherited half of the Frankish kingdom.  Pepin, in the Merovingian tradition of the time, split his kingdom between his two sons.   Three years later Carloman died and Charlemagne took control of the entire

The best books on Charlemagne

Before we get to the books, could you just tell us, very briefly, when Charlemagne was around and also when Charles became Charles the Great—Charlemagne.

Charlemagne was born halfway through the eighth century and died in It was a period when Europe was undergoing enormous changes. The Roman Empire had disappeared, more or less. There was a Merovingian dynasty that had just been exiled and Charlemagne’s father became king. At that point, Charlemagne was three years old. We are talking about a new dynasty here that came to power in a palace coup. Charles’s father was Pippin—Pippin III, we call him now. He played a very clever game, helped by the Pope, to oust the last Merovingian king, who was from a legitimate dynasty that had been on the throne for two and a half centuries. By really clever manoeuvring, Pippin managed to become the King of the Franks.

His son, Charles, was just ‘Charles’. He became ‘Charlemagne’ after his death. He succeeded his father and, like many sons who succeed a royal father, he tried to outdo his father in every possible way. And that worked for all kinds of reasons. We know him as the first emperor in the West after
