Talent, intelligence and grace: when it comes to tennis, Chanda Rubin predated the legendary Williams sisters as African American examples of excellence at the then Lipton, now Miami Open.
The former No. 6 player in the world reached the finals of what was then the Lipton Open at Crandon Park before losing to all-time Majors winner Steffi Graf. In some ways, she paved the way for both Venus and Serena Williams.
In fact, Rubin is one of the few if not the only player who can say she beat Serena Williams half the time she played her, with one win and won loss in to the woman who is now atop the WTA rankings.
