In a popular song from the start of the mambo boom (late s-early s), Cuban musician Benny Moré flirtatiously described the dancing talent of Mexican and Cuban women. He sang in his golden voice, “Pero qué bonito y sabroso bailan el mambo las mexicanas, mueven la cintura y los hombros igualito a las cubanas.” (“Mexican women dance mambo so wonderfully and so full of rhythm, they move their waists and shoulders just like Cuban women.”) Moré first performed the song “Bonito y Sabroso” in Mexico City with the band of mambo king Dámaso Pérez Prado. A few years later, he would travel to Cuba and record the song there. Mambo, a Cuban music and dance phenomenon, had begun to sweep the world in popularity, spreading a fever for the provocative and sensual moves it inspired.
At the same time, another group of women in Mexico—Mexican, Cuban, and American in one case—danced to these Cuban rhythms, receiving almost limitless attention. These women, actresses called rumberas, and their performances live on in

Amalia Aguilar is a Cuban-born Mexican film actress and dancer of the Golden age of Mexican cinema in the s and s. She was considered one of the icons of the Rumberas film. She was also known as &#;El Torbellino del Caribe&#;.
Amalia was born in Matanzas, Cuba on July 3, She and her sister Cecilia were stimulated artistically by their parents from their childhood. She studied ballet in Havana, with teachers like Lita Enhart, Lalo Maura, and Jorge Harrison. She began her career next to her sister Cecilia. They were called &#;The Aguilar Sisters&#;. The two girls were part of the Cuban Theatre Company.
In Havana, the Aguilar Sisters met the famous Cuban dancer Julio Richard, who was looking for young dancers for his ballet. Initially, Amalia was rejected by Richard due to her inexperience. After some years, Cecilia got married when they were on a tour in Panama. Julio Richard noticed Amalia again and decided to take her to Mexico as a dance partner.
