उन्हें उनके विद्वत्ता और तप के लिए जाना जाता है।
जन्म
आचार्य विद्यासागर का जन्म 10 अक्टूबर को कर्नाटक के बेलगाम जिले के सदलगा में शरदपूर्णिमा के दिन हुआ था।
उनके पिता का नाम श्री मल्लप्पा था, और उनके माता का नाम श्रीमती था।
इनके पिता बाद में मुनि मल्लिसागर बने और उनके माता जो बाद में आर्यिका समयामती बनी।

आचार्य विद्यासागर जी को में अजमेर में 22 वर्ष की आयु में आचार्य ज्ञानसागर ने दीक्षा दी जो कि आचार्य शांतिसागर के वंश के थे।
आचार्य विद्यासागर को में ज्ञानसागर जी द्वारा आचार्य पद दिया गया था। विद्यासागर जी के बड़े भाई ही गृहस्थ जीवन व्यतीत करते हैं और उनके अलावा सभी घर के लोग सन्यास ले चुके हैं।
उनके भाई अनंतनाथ और शांतिनाथ ने आचार्य विद्यासागर जी से दीक्षा ग्रहण की ओर मुनी योगसागर और मुनि समयसागर कहलाए।

Background
He was born as Vidyadhar on 10 October on sharad Purnima in Sadalga, District Belgaum, Karnataka. His father was Shri Mallappa (Mallinath), who later became Muni Mallisagar. His mother Shrimanti later became Aryika Samayamati.

Acharya Vidyasagara is an expert in Sanskrit, Prakrit and several modern languages such as Hindi, Marathi and Kannada. He has been a prolific author in Hindi and Sanskrit.

विद्यासागरजी का जन्म कर्नाटक के बेलगाँव जिले के गाँव चिक्कोड़ी में आश्विन शुक्ल पूर्णिमा (शरद पूर्णिमा), संवत् २००३ को हुआ था। श्री मल्लप्पाजी अष्टगे तथा श्रीमती अष्टगे के आँगन में जन्मे विद्याधर (घर का नाम पीलू) को आचार्य श्रेष्ठ ज्ञानसागरजी महाराज का शिष्यत्व पाने का सौभाग्य प्राप्त हुआ था। राजस्थान की ऐतिहासिक नगरी अजमेर में आषाढ़ सुदी पंचमी विक्रम संवत् २०२५ को लगभग २२ वर्ष की आयु में संयम धर्म के परिपालन हेतु उन्होंने पिच्छी कमंडल धारण करके मुनि दीक्षा धारण की थी। नसीराबाद (अजमेर) में गुरुवर ज्ञानसागरजी ने शिष्य विद्यासागर को अपने करकमलों से मृगसर कृष्णा द्वितीय संवत् २०२९ को संस्कारित करके अपने आचार्य पद से विभूषित कर दिया और फिर आचार्यश्री विद्यासागरजी के निर्देशन में समाधिमरण हेतु सल्लेखना ग्रहण कर ली।
