The Cinematic Orchestra

It’s been twelve years since The Cinematic Orchestra released a studio album. At the time, in , “Ma Fleur” was recognized for its bold departure from the group’s sonic traditions; in the years since, it’s been continuously celebrated, with tracks like ‘To Build A Home’ reaching huge audiences, spilling out of televisions, cinemas and radios long after its release.

They didn’t disappear, the band have performed to larger and larger audiences and sold out the likes of London's Royal Albert Hall, Philharmonie de Paris, Rome’s Auditorium Park Della and the Sydney Opera House. Coachella, Glastonbury, Fuji Rock, Montreux and Sonar have all played host to the band’s much loved live performances. They have also appeared at the Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Awards for Stanley Kubrick and New York’s Summerstage with the legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin. They curated a series of events at London’s prestigious Barbican Centre featuring commissions from the prodigiously talented Austin Peralta (RIP) and seen the likes of Dorian Concept, Moses Sumney and Gilles Peterson support them on stage over the years.

The Cinematic Orchestra was created in London in by DJ Jason Swinscoe. He has collaborated closely with co-writer Dom Smith since the beginning and they have made several albums and filled venues including London's Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. The track "To Build a Home" from their album Ma Fleur can be heard in many films and television shows. The song topped the charts in after it was heard on the TV series Orange Is the New Black. Their other studio albums include Motion () and Every Day () and they have released concert albums Live at the Big Chill () and Live at the Royal Albert Hall (). Le nom dit tout ; ou presque. Formé en par l’Écossais Jason Swinscoe, le Cinematic Orchestra ne pouvait qu’être cinématographique. Comme la version électro-jazz et downtempo d’une vraie-fausse B.O. Une musique ambitieuse et mélodique qui déroule une riche partition atmosphérique au cœur de laquelle improvisations jazz, DJing, électro à peine lounge et soul sensuelle se croisent, s’effleurent et se toisent avec envie. Swinscoe invite même occasionnellement de grandes voix comme Patrick Watson, Lou Rhodes, Roots Manuva ou Fontella Bass, histoire de rendre l’ensemble encore plus organique et puissant. De ce métissage soul et électronique, qui prend sur scène une dimension encore plus impressionnante, naît la bande (très) originale d’un film que chacun pourra se faire dans sa propre tête.

At the time, in , “Ma Fleur” was recognised for its bold departure from the group’s sonic traditions; in the years since, it’s been continuously celebrated, with tracks like ‘To Build A Home’ reaching huge audiences, spilling out of televisions, cinemas and radios long after its release. Heralded by the new creative partnership of founding member Jason Swinscoe with longtime collaborator Dominic Smith, The Cinematic Orchestra are back with a definitive new album, “To Believe”, that explores a timeless question of vital importance in - what to believe? They have enlisted album contributions from collaborators old and new from Moses Sumney, Roots Manuva, Heidi Vogel, Grey Reverend, Dorian Concept and Tawiah. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson features on strings, Dennis Hamm on keys and photographer and visual artist Brian “B+” Cross collaborated with Swinscoe and Smith on the album’s concept. The record was mixed by multiple Grammy winner Tom Elmhirst in Jimi Hendrix’s legendary Electric Lady Studios. The album artwork comes courtesy of The Designer
