Lincoln, Abraham
Gabor S. Boritt with Matthew Pinsker
THE date was 11 February One day short of his fifty-second birthday, Abraham Lincoln, president-elect of the United States, was saying his farewell to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois:
My friendsNo one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling of sadness at this parting. To this place, and the kindness of these people, I owe every thing. Here I have lived a quarter of a century, and have passed from a young to an old man. Here my children have been born, and one is buried. I now leave, not knowing when, or whether ever, I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested upon Washington. Without the assistance of the Divine Being, who ever attended him, I cannot succeed. With that assistance I cannot fail. Trusting in Him, who can go with me, and remain with you and be every where for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well. To His care commending you, as I hope in your prayers you will commend me, I bid you an affectionate farewell.
Lincoln's heart was heavy. His old life was behind him. History tells us that he had very good reason to wonder "when, or whether ever"

Lincoln had less than a year of schooling. Books were scarce and so was paper. He worked his arithmetic problems on a board and cleaned the board with a knife so he could use it again.
The family owned a Bible and he spent many hours reading it. He would copy parts of it in order to memorize it. Sometimes he would walk for miles to borrow a book. One of his favorite books was "The Life of George Washington".
By the time he was 17, he knew he wanted to be a lawyer. He would walk 17 miles to the county courthouse in order to watch the lawyers work. He sat in the back of the courtroom and watched them as they shook their fists and became red in the face. Then he would go home and think about what he had seen.
When he was 21 years old he moved

What makes a good leader? Is it the way he leads the nation and ensures his people that the country is gearing towards positive changes? Is it the way he is able to handle stress in times of economic turmoil and threats to the nationโs development? Is it his honesty and genuine soul that just makes the people respect him as a leader and as a person? A good president must not only possess one positive trait. He must possess all of them.
Over the years, leaders have come and gone. Some remain in our hearts with joyful memories, while others are remembered with bitterness and irritation. And when you try to recall those names written on the good list, the first name that would be remembered would be no other th
