    Haruki Murakami is a Japanese novelist, short-story writer, and essayist. His works, characterized by a signature blend of the otherworldly and the mundane, have been bestsellers in Japan and across the world.

    Born in Kyoto in , Murakami studied at Waseda University in Tokyo, where he met his wife, Yoko. The two married and upon graduating ran a jazz bar called Peter Cat from to After a moment of inspiration at a baseball game, Murakami began writing, and published his debut novel, Hear the Wind Sing (), at age thirty. Influenced by American writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Chandler, and Richard Brautigan, Murakami has said that he wrote passages of the novel in English and then translated his words into Japanese to have a more Western rhythm to his prose. The novel won Japan's Gunzo Literature Prize. Murakami continued with Pinball, (), and then A Wild Sheep Chase (), which made him stand out from the Japanese literary establishment and brought him critical renown.

    Murakami gained broader fame and commercial success with Norwegian Wood (), which he wrote while living abroad in Europe.

    Haruki Murakami's biography

    Haruki Murakami was born in Kyoto, western Japan, in and moved to Tokyo to attend Waseda University. He embarked on his career with his first novel "Hear the Wind Sing," which won the Gunzo Award for New Writers in He has won other Japanese prizes including the Tanizaki Junichiro Prize for "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World."

    A popular author, both domestically and abroad, he shot to fame after writing the best-selling novel "Norwegian Wood."

    His other novels include "A Wild Sheep Chase," "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle," "Kafka on the Shore," "1Q84," and "Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage."

    Murakami has also authored several works of nonfiction including "Underground" which is based on a collection of interviews he did with the victims of the sarin attack on the Tokyo subway system.

    Murakami is the recipient of multiple international awards including the Franz Kafka Award, the Jerusalem Prize, the Catalonia International Prize, the Welt Literature Prize and the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award.
