“Which English translation of The Tale of Genji should I read?”
So you want to read the world’s oldest novel, which is over a thousand pages, and you don’t read Japanese.
No problem.
There are four complete English versions of Murasaki Shikibu’s thousand-year-old episodic Buddhist tale of love and loss in Heian Japan. The novel has also been abridged and published in incomplete translations as well, so there’s definitely some potential for confusion. Keep reading to learn how to choose an edition that’s right for you.
The Tale of Genji: Translations
There are four major, complete English translations of The Tale of Genji, shown below in chronological order along with three partial translations. They are all in print.

Born in England in , I was educated in the US and France. During my academic career I specialized in Japanese literature. My last teaching position, after stints in Canada, the US, and Norway, was at the Australian National University in Canberra. After that I retired with my wife to a farm in in New South Wales. We've bred alpacas here for over twenty years, although our herd is smaller than it used to be. And I've continued to publish books. In summer we see blue-tongue skinks--a big, slow lizard that really does have a blue tongue. So I named my own book imprint (Blue-Tongue Books) after one that scrabbled at my window, wanting to come in.

Having considered a couple of twentieth-century translations of Murasaki Shikibus novel The Tale of Genji, were ready to move on and take a closer look at the first offering from this century. Weve already examined a number of differing approaches, and todays choice represents yet another change in direction, with a translation that, on occasion, makes the reader work for their enjoyment. Its an interesting development, but the big question here, of course, is whether its worth the effort. Well, theres only one way to find out please, come this way

Royall Tyler is another big-name Japanese-to-English literary translator, and Ive tried his work on several occasions, enjoying (among other books) The Tale of the Heike and The Miracles of the Kasuga Deity. If theres anything like a home-town favourite in these Genji Olympics, then the Tyler Genji must be it, and not just because of Tylers residence in Australia.
