Early life. Jackie Wilson was born Jack Leroy Wilson in Detroit, Michigan, on June 9, He was named after his father, and his family and friends called him Sonny. Sonny Wilson had no siblings for roughly the first decade of his life and forever remained the center of the world for his mother, Eliza Mae. Ultimately, they would share the same burial plot.
Wilsons parents separated when he was nine or ten years old. His father, who could not hold a job due to alcoholism, began living on the streets with other winos. Sonnys mother married again, this time to a man who worked regularly at a Ford plant. Their union produced Sonnys stepsister, Joyce.
