Who is Gilchrist Olympio?

Gilchrist Olympio is a Togolese politician and the President of the Union of Forces for Change, the country's main opposition party. Since the late s, Mr. Olympio gained notoriety as a charismatic West African political thought leader, because of his courageous and outspoken opposition to the brutal regime of late president General Gnassingbe Eyadema in Togo. Mr. Olympio is also the son the first elected president of Togo and father of the small country's independence movement, former President Sylvanus Olympio, who was assassinated in a coup led by Gnassingbe Eyadema. Gilchrist Olympio and his family lived in exile from the mids to the early s, but has now returned to Togo.

Selon une rumeur persistante la seule évocation du nom de Gilchrist Olympio est suffisant pour donner des insomnie à la junte militaire qui régente le Togo depuis 40 ans. . Von Amnesty International einst als „Terrorstaat“1 bezeichnet, bereitet Togo einem französischen Journalisten auch heute noch ein gewisses Unbehagen. Er kommt schließlich aus einem Land, das seit 49 Jahren das blutrünstige Regime unterstützt und dessen Journalisten dabei teils tatkräftig mithalfen. Der langjährige Korrespondent der Nachrichtenagentur Agence France Presse (AFP) und gleichzeitig enger Vertrauter von General Gnassingbé Eyadéma, der das Land von bis regierte, war niemand anderes als Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, der Sohn des früheren französischen Präsidenten François Mitterrand.

Fast 39 Jahre lang war Eyadéma der Inbegriff eines afrikanischen Diktators von Frankreichs Gnaden. La journée de ce lundi 13 janvier au Togo marque le 57e anniversaire de l’assassinat du Premier Président, Sylvanus Olympio, par des soldats de l’armée coloniale mais le véritable auteur du coup reste à ce jour un sujet à polémique.

 

Ce jour commémoratif des faits reste une journée ordinaire au Togo ou les populations vaquent à leurs activités par opposition à un passé récent ou elle était festoyée par l’ancien régime.

 

A la date anniversaire de ce coup, Gilchrist Olympio, le fils de l’ex Président a, dans un message de nouvel an et de conseils préélectoraux aux togolais, déclaré qu’«aujourd’hui il y a exactement cinquante-sept ans, que le père de l’indépendance de notre pays, nous a quittés tragiquement sous les balles de l’impérialiste ».

 

En se remémorant le jour de la tragique disparition de Olympio, Gilchrist a poursuivi que « Ce jour dramatique nous ramène chaque année à la douloureuse question du pourquoi ? Et nous convie à l’espérance d’un jour nouveau qui mettra fin à la sombre nuit du 12 au 13 janvier  ».
