  • Operation Greif and the Trial of the “Most Dangerous Man in Europe.”

Operation Greif and the Trial of the “Most Dangerous Man in Europe.” A disheveled George S. Patton reported to Dwight Eisenhower with unsettling news from the front. “Ike, I’ve never seen such a goddamn foul-up! The Krauts are infiltrating behind our lines, raising hell, cutting wires and turning around road signs!”1 Such was the characteristic response in the aftermath of Operation Greif, orchestrated by Germany’s top commando, Otto Skorzeny. Through his actions during the Ardennes Offensive of , and his acquittal while on trial, Skorzeny effectively utilized disinformation and covert operations to both earn his credibility and infamous reputation. Born in Vienna in , Skorzeny led a mundane life during the years of the First World War. Despite his inability to concentrate on his studies, he managed to graduate in from the Technischen Hochschule in Wien with an engineering degree.2 His participation in the Schlagende Verbindungen (dueling societies) during his academic career gave Skorzeny the reputation of being a fierce fighter and resulted in his characteristic scars that covered both sides of his face

      Himmler

      September 19,
For me, as a reader of WW2 history for over 40 years, the figure of Heinrich Himmler looms large. At one point the 2nd most powerful individual in the 3rd Reich. A veritable minister for everything. But oddly one of those characters who I had never really read about in too much depth. So with Peter Padfield’s biography I had high hopes of learning as to what made this sinister individual tick. I have, unfortunately, finished this lengthy book feeling let down by what I can only describe as a lost opportunity.

He quotes from Himmler's diary and with that builds a "psychological profile" quoting everyone from Hugh Trevor-Roper to Buddhist thought to build his (obvious) disdain for Himmler's mental state. This was not what I was expecting but I found it initially extremely interesting. Added in between all this "psychological profiling" was a short history of various other terrors perpetrated in the name of ideology. Witch hunts in Bavaria odd years previously through to the Spanish Inquisition and how they equated to "public demands" (my words) to "find a scapegoat for social frustration" (Padfield's words). Padfield quotes Trevor-Roper and Henry Kaman in

Heimler’s painting “Mauerspringer” (The Wall Jumper) shows a man jumping across the Berlin Wall from West to East Berlin. To Heimler, however, the direction of the jump was less significant than the idea of surmounting the wall. The man in the painting symbolizes
