Charline von Heyl was born in Germany in and has lived in the United States since She studied painting in Hamburg and Düsseldorf and participated in the Cologne-based art scene in the s. She currently divides her time between New York, NY and Marfa, TX.

Von Heyl's first survey show was at Le Consortium, Dijon in Her first U.S. museum show was at the Dallas Museum of Art in and her first US survey was at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia in In , she will be inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Her recent solo exhibitions include Petzel Gallery, New York (); Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne (); Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Among the dozen or so New Yorkers leading an exuberant revival in abstract painting, Charline von Heyl stands out for a fearless stylistic diversity. The German artist moved to New York in , and since then she has brought back into painting themes and motifs once left for dead: thoughtful design, seductive color, and passages of figuration unafraid of being called kitsch. And yet von Heyl’s enigmatic art, which has never developed in a single direction but flitted among aims and approaches, does not shrink from the challenges posed to painting over the last century. It runs right into them, and insists that a future for the medium can only be built on its past.

Von Heyl was born in Mainz, Germany, in In the 80s she moved to Hamburg, where she met Albert Oehlen and other painters of the raucous generation before hers; later, in the hothouse of early 90s Cologne, she walked a thin line between faith in the future of the medium and doubt that the art world still cared. Charline von Heyl’s abstract paintings, drawings and collages are endlessly layered, enigmatic visual experiences filled with surprising juxtapositions and interactions. Her work resolutely strives against maintaining a cohesive narrative or signature style, but instead is fearless in its formal diversity. It requires active perception and participation to take in her bold lines and gestures, and abstract shapes and patterns. Her configurations possess a unique dynamism and energy, imbued with flashes of humour but simultaneously unafraid of poetic depth and pathos.

 

Embodied in von Heyl’s work are series of experiences and emotions, often opposing to create an intriguing sense of contradiction and tension. They impart to the viewer an unpredictable chain of associations and subtle references. Her canvases are as thoughtful and cerebral as they are aesthetically balanced, with their bold but harmonious colour palettes and their almost printed, two-dimensional quality.
