Charles H. Utter, better known as &#;Colorado Charlie,&#; was a trapper, guide, and prospector who made his way west, becoming good friends with Wild Bill Hickok and was acquainted with Calamity Jane.
Charlie was born in about near Niagara Falls, New York, and grew up in Illinois. As an adult, he moved west, and in the s, he was earning a living as a trapper, prospector, and guide in Colorado.
A small man in stature, at five and a half feet tall, Charlie made up for it in his dandified appearance. He was extremely neat with long flowing blond hair and a perfectly groomed mustache. He was known to have worn hand-tailored fringed buckskins, fine linen shirts, beaded moccasins, a big silver belt buckle, and a pair of revolvers mounted in gold, silver, and pearl.
He slept in a tent surrounded by fine California blankets and always kept a mirror, combs, razors, and whisk brooms in his possession. Obsessed with cleanliness, he bathed every morning, an oddity in the mining camps and settlements of the Old West. (Charlie) Utter was born near Niagara Falls, NY in He spent his youth in Illinois, then moved to western Colorado Territory in the s where he earned his reputation as a trapper, prospector and a popular, well-known packer and guide in the silver and gold regions of the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. Coming in at only five feet six inches tall, Charlie apparently made up for his size by his “dandified” appearance. He wore his blond hair long, complemented by a moustache. He was described by Leander P. Richardson in a Colorado newspaper as a &#;courageous little man&#; who wore beaded moccasins, fringed leggings and coat, revolvers mounted in gold, silver and pearl and a belt with a big silver buckle.
In , Utter predicted the Black Hills gold rush would be a &#;lallapaloozer&#;—so in the spring of , he organized a wagon train in Georgetown, Colo., and headed for the new gold fields. At the moment the names of his parents is not known. He isknown as Charles H., C.H., Charlie and Charley Utter. He was one of the historical people that was involved with Deadwood, North Dakota. He also lived in Colorado, New Mexico, and Columbia / Panama.

Colorado Charlie Utter is best known as Wild Bill Hickok’s best friend, the man who led the wagon train that brought the gunfighter (and Calamity Jane) to Deadwood. A few weeks later, Utter buried the gunfighter and reinterred the remains in
Utter then drifted across the West, mostly running saloons and dance halls. Stories say he moved to Panama in , where he served as a doctor and pharmacist among the Indians (not sure if he had any training). It’s unclear when, where and how he died.
