by Leslie Bentley
(Current: 12/99)

EDUCATOR PAULO FREIRE was born September 19, He grew up in the Northeast of Brazil where his experiences deeply influenced his life work. The world economic crisis forced Freire to know hunger and poverty at a young age. He recalls in Moacir Gadotti’s book, Reading Paulo Freire, &#;I didn’t understand anything because of my hunger. I wasn’t dumb. It wasn’t lack of interest. My social condition didn’t allow me to have an education. Experience showed me once again the relationship between social class and knowledge&#; (5). Because Freire lived among poor rural families and laborers, he gained a deep understanding of their lives and of the effects of socio-economics on education.

Freire became a grammar teacher while still in high school. Even then his intuition pushed him toward a dialogic education in which he strived to understand students’ expectations (5). While on the Faculty of Law in Recife, Freire met his wife, Elza Maia Costa de Oliveira, an elementary school teacher and an important force in his life. They married in when Freire was 23 and eventually had five children, three of whom became educa

Military dictatorship – arrested in , Paulo Freire spent 70 days in a barracks cell in Olinda (PE). On discovering that he was a teacher, one of the officers asked him to tech some of the recruits to read and write, and the educator explained that he had been imprisoned for the exact reason that he was teaching people to read and write.

PAULO FREIRE () is regarded as one of the most influential educators of the 20th century. Freire's pedagogy is synonymous with critical pedagogy, critical literacy, dialogical pedagogy and praxis learning. It has contributed to the development of popular education, participatory-action research and transformative learning theory. In light of Freire's contribution to adult education, it is surprising that biographical sketches of Freire in English remain incomplete. The absence of accurate information reinforces Freire's mystique. His reader follows Freire - the philosopher, writer, educator and social activist as he engages in his own conscientization. Freire struggles to reform institutions that promote banking education, narrow the gap between theory and practice in praxis approaches to social transformation, participate in the redevelopment of countries emerging from post-colonialism and revolution, and integrate epiphanic life experiences into his personhood and pedagogy. Raised in a Roman Catholic home, Freire insisted that he never abandoned his faith despite the strong influence of Marxist philosophy in his writing. Rarely me
