When we selected the Norwegian-American architecture studio SnØhetta as the winner for our new headquarters competition, we were looking for an architect who would understand our identity, our values and our aspiration for collaborative work spaces. We were also determined to find an architect who would respect the architectural heritage of the city of Beirut and its traditional urban landmark.

Recognizing the difficulty of impacting the construction landscape of Beirut city through just one building, Banque Libano-Française endeavored to turn the project of its new headquarters into a catalyst for contemporary, meaningful architecture in Lebanon, and to inspire other players through an innovative and enriching process.
Throughout the competition, the architects’ visits to Beirut featured gatherings with the Lebanese academic and artistic communities, as well as real estate professionals through conferences, exhibitions, meetings and receptions organized by BLF.

Notes
The Pan American Building designed by George Rais and Théo Canaan, assisted by Assem Salam, is a finely proportioned and well detailed building that drew its richness from appropriate understanding of, and response to, rational needs. Here, the implementation in Riad Solh Square at the prow of the street and the need to react differently in terms of sun control on the east and south elevations, determined design choices. Rais created a subtle balance between a separate reading of the sides and the unity of the building as a whole. An attention to human scale is found in various aspects of the building, namely in the eastern wall which shifts back at pedestrian level, to define the entrance on Rue Riad Solh. The building had a mobile by Alexander Calder who came to Beirut at the time.

The first edition of Dubai Design Week was also the springboard for ICONIC CITIES, a new series of annual exhibitions that explore the culture and design scene of the Middle East's urban centres.
