Early Life and Education
Hughes completed his education at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, graduating in During his early years, he lived in the United States with his wife, poet Sylvia Plath, before returning to the United Kingdom. In , he obtained a Master of Arts degree from Cambridge University.
Literary Career
Throughout his career, Hughes engaged in various literary activities, including lecturing and editing, translating and writing essays, as well as creating stories, plays, opera librettos, and children's books. His early collections, "The Hawk in the Rain" (), "Lupercal" (), and "Wodwo" (), were characterized by animalistic poems that vividly depicted the natural world, featuring hawks, jaguars, pikes, and buffalos. Ted Hughes was one of the biggest figures in British poetry from the s until his death in His poems have a dark energy and the rhythms and sounds of Old English, often to do with the natural world, with animals and the landscape and with myths and legends. Hughes’s imagination was a rich, driving force for his work, allowing him to tap into the power of dreams and of magic, as well as using his brilliant skill at observing creatures to help catch their movements and nature on the page.

He came into prominence in the late fifties and early sixties, having earned a reputation of a prolific, original and skilful poet, which he maintained to the present day.
Ted Hughes was born in in Yorkshire into a family of a carpenter. After graduating from Grammar School he went up to Cambridge to study English, but later changed to Archaeology and Anthropology. At Cambridge he met Sylvia Plath, whom he married in His first collection of poems Hawk in the Rain was published in The same year he made his first records of reading of some Yeats&#;s poems and one of his own for BBC Third Programme. Shortly afterwards, the couple went to live to America and stayed there until His next collection of poems Lupercal () was followed by two books for children Meet My Folks () and Earth Owl (). Born on 17 August , Edward James 'Ted' Hughes would, over the course of his life, produce some of the most important and innovative poetry written in English in the twentieth century. As a child, Hughes lived with his father, William, his mother, Edith Farrar, and his elder siblings Gerald and Olwyn at 1 Aspinall Street, Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire. Aged seven, he moved to Mexborough where William ran a tobacco shop. His immediate family would all become involved in Hughes’s poetic career at various points and for different reasons; Hughes drew upon his father’s experiences as a frontline soldier during the First World War to inform some of his finest war-verse; his mother’s voice is registered literally and figuratively in a number of poems, but she is most keenly felt in Remains of Elmet (); Gerald Hughes, who emigrated to Australia, is present in a number of poems and Olwyn was to become Hughes’s literary agent.
