Three Books About the Rise and Fall of Spiro Agnew
This week marks the 40th anniversary of Vice President Spiro Agnews resignation on October 10, Strangely, I just checked Twitter and #agnew is not trending.
The morality tale of Spiro Agnew is an incredible story that deserves more attention than it currently gets. Im honoring the anniversary here by reviewing the three major books that lay out all the facts in fascinating detail, even though all three books are currently out of print. The world may have forgotten Spiro Agnew, but his story is highly relevant, and the messy milieu of federal politics that enabled the Agnew affair is still very much with us today.
White Knight: The Rise of Spiro Agnew by Jules Witcover
White Knight was published in , just before the Watergate scandal broke. Its a fascinating study of Spiro Agnew at the peak of his glory, written by Jules Witcover, a Washington Post journalist who built his career as an Agnew-watcher. Anna McGregor, Spiro, Scribe Publications, July , 30 pp., RRP $ (hbk), ISBN
Inspired by the author’s observation of a spider spinning its web in her own backyard, this delightful picture book explores themes of tenacity, ingenuity and adaptation as Spiro builds and rebuilds his web in the hungry pursuit of food.
The eye-catching front cover depicts a silver spider web catching the title along with its central character, Spiro. He is one determined little arachnid, demonstrating perseverance (and research skills!) in order to snare an evening meal.
The narrative is light-hearted, further emphasised by Spiro’s neon pink colour. The subplot of the apple, the worm and the bird is another humourous touch, adding another element of suspense. The repetition of certain phrases further engages the reader.
Anna McGregor’s vibrant illustrative style and quirky humour maybe familiar to young children, particularly the CBCA Early Childhood winner Anemeone is not the Enemy and the CBCA Early Childhood Notable A Pair of Pears and an Orange. Spiro is her fifth picture book, with another one in the works.
