Søren Kierkegaard: Biography of the Father of Existentialism

5 minutes

Søren Kierkegaard&#;s work is based on two basic dimensions that defined the essence of his life: love and faith.

They say that Søren Kierkegaard loved Regina Olsen until his last day. However, his life purpose was to dedicate his whole body and soul to the study of philosophy and Christian faith. This Danish theologist and philosopher had to live with the pain of not being able to be with his love. But thanks to that, he was able to build his remarkable legacy.

Kierkegaard’s work is mainly based on faith. According to him, it’s only possible to reach salvation and balance in times of despair through faith. This perspective was a reaction to Hegel’s idealism. In fact, what defined this renowned Danish philosopher was his criticism of the religious institutions that, according to him, were hypocritical.

The dualism that shaped his whole life is quite evident in his books Fear and Trembling, Philosophical Fragments, and Diary of a Seducer. Love, suffering, and impossible passion, against the need of devoting himself to theology, characterized the harsh journey of one of the most relevant a

Søren Kierkegaard (–)

Søren Kierkegaard (–), a Danish philosopher, theologian, poet, and social critic, is widely regarded as the &#;father of existentialism.&#; His ideas have had a profound impact on modern philosophy, theology, and psychology.

Kierkegaard’s work often wrestles with the concepts of individuality, subjectivity, freedom, and the role of faith. Though his writings were relatively obscure during his lifetime, they have since influenced many of the most significant intellectual movements of the 20th and 21st centuries, including existentialism, postmodernism, and Christian theology.

Kierkegaard’s father instilled in him a sense of guilt and introspection that would become central to his philosophical inquiries.

Kierkegaard studied theology at the University of Copenhagen but soon found himself drawn to ph

Søren Kierkegaard's remarkable combination of genius and peculiarity made this a fair if arrogant prediction. But Kierkegaard's life has been notoriously hard to study, so complex was the web of fact and fiction in his work. Joakim Garff's biography of Kierkegaard is thus a landmark achievement. A seamless blend of history, philosophy, and psychological insight, all conveyed with novelistic verve, this is the most comprehensive and penetrating account yet written of the life and works of the enigmatic Dane who changed the course of intellectual history.

Garff portrays Kierkegaard not as the all-controlling impresario behind some of the most important works of modern philosophy and religious thought--books credited with founding existentialism and prefiguring postmodernism--but rather as a man whose writings came to control him. Kierkegaard saw himself as a vessel for his writings, a tool in the hand of God, and eventually as a martyr singled out to call for the end of "Christendom." Garff explores t
