Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of India’s non-violent independence movement against British rule and in South Africa who advocated for the civil rights of Indians. Born in Porbandar, India, Gandhi studied law and organized boycotts against British institutions in peaceful forms of civil disobedience. He was killed by a fanatic in
Gandhi leading the Salt March in protest against the government monopoly on salt production.
Early Life and Education
Indian nationalist leader Gandhi (born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was born on October 2, , in Porbandar, Kathiawar, India, which was then part of the British Empire.
Gandhi’s father, Karamchand Gandhi, served as a chief minister in Porbandar and other states in western India. His mother, Putlibai, was a deeply religious woman who fasted regularly.
Young Gandhi was a shy, unremarkable student who was so timid that he slept with the lights on even as a teenager. In the ensuing years, the teenager rebelled by smoking, eating meat and stealing change from household servants.

In December , Dr. Kumar initiated Senate Bill SB , through GIIP in the Twenty-Eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii. It was unanimously passed in the House & the Senate and signed into Act 5 by former Governor David Y. Ige in April , making Hawaii the first state in the nation to declare October 2 as “Mahatma Gandhi Day in Hawaii”. In December , Dr. Kumar initiated House Bill, HB , through GIIP in the Hawaii Legislature. Again, this bill was unanimously passed in the House and the Senate and signed into Act by former Governor David Y. Ige on June 21, , making Hawaii the first state in the nation to declare “June 21 each year as International Yoga Day in Hawaii”. Dr. Kumar has authored numerous books. He has contributed several articles on faith, peace, Mahatma Gandhi was a prominent Indian political leader who was a leading figure in the campaign for Indian independence. He employed non-violent principles and peaceful disobedience as a means to achieve his goal. He was assassinated in , shortly after achieving his life goal of Indian independence. In India, he is known as Father of the Nation.
