Philippe Dodard studied at the Academy of Fine Arts (now ENARTS) in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In , he obtained a scholarship to the École Nationale de Bordeaux, France, where he specialized in educational graphics, perfecting his skills in this captivating field. Shortly after, he also explored political caricature in the Haitian daily paper Le Nouvelliste.

Throughout this maturation, Dodard’s work freed itself from any school and conventions to explore the cultures fused in the constitution of Caribbean identity: The Taino-Arawak, African, and European.  The works quickly attracted the attention of researchers, collectors, and institutions. American fashion designer Donna Karan took inspiration from them for her Spring Collection, which gave rise to a joint exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA).

Born in Haiti in , PHILIPPE DODARD studied at the National School of Arts in Port-au-Prince and at the École international de Bordeaux, France.

Known for his synthesis of traditional Haitian pictorial expressions and contemporary articulations, Dodard paints the Caribbean in a multiplicity of mediums from canvas to wood, stone, and, iron. His textured, layered public works often incorporate created objects rendering the mural a force of attraction fusing the environment with a serene vitality.

Pegged to Haitian traditions and the symbolisms that have cohabited in the island’s rich history, and contemporary global interconnexions, the works of Dodard stand as a unique approach in Caribbean aesthetics.

Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in , Philippe Dodard is a leading contemporary artist of the Caribbean and the African Diaspora. His artistic evolution was a series of steps, leading to major solo and international exhibitions, including Arte Americas (), the Venice Biennale (), Biennale of Latin American Drawings, Santo Domingo (), and the Biennale of Caribbean and Central America Art, Dominican Republic ().

Dodard was also the Cultural Adviser for the First Lady Elisabeth D. Preval, and the artistic leader of Plas Timoun, a psycho-social project created for the relief of children affected by the earthquake of January 12, He was instrumental in the reconstruction of the iron market in Haiti as the project chief for Arts & Ambiances. His new work “The Rising Soul” is now in the permanent collection in Triennal Internacional del Caribe au Museo de Arte Moderno a Santo Domingo. The earthquake rocked Haiti to its core. Hundreds of thousands lost their lives and thousands more were left vulnerable. Philippe Dodard, a celebrated and admired figure in the Haitian art world and abroad, used the significant and tragic event to create art and encapsulate the emotions and memories born out of the earthquake.

“[At first] I could not paint because painting seemed to be a recreation to me in a period of emergency,” he said. “I was trying to help as much as I could, those who were in severe difficulties.  My home in Montagne Noire was left unscathed and thus became a host house for those who were coming to help the country.”

At that moment, he was focused on what needed to be done to help the country get back on its feet.  However, after an interview with a German television station about the loss of major art in museums and patrimonial places like the St. Trinity Church, his focus started to shift. During the interview, he showcased a piece titled &#;The Premonition&#; that he began one week before the earthquake. Inspiration had returned to Dodard.
