At the age of 3, when John was just a toddler, Ann organized a play in which the entire family participated. Ann played Cinderella, Joan played Cinderella's sister, Bill played the Prince, and John had the role of a dog. At the age of 8, John enrolled in a theater school where family friends, the Pivens, taught. Ann, Joan, and their son Jeremy Piven were already studying there, and Jeremy would become John's best friend for many years.
