Jean-Antoine Watteau
The few facts that are known about Watteau's life are in distinct contrast to the great importance of his art, which set new standards in French painting at the beginning of the eighteenth century. One can mention his modest origins in provincial Flanders, then under French occupation, his first training under a little-known local painter, and his move to Paris around His two teachers there, Claude Gillot and Claude III Audran, nurtured his talent in different ways. Through Gillot he learned about possibilities of visualization provided by the theatre, and with them the notion of an ambiguous reality. From Audran he learned the art of the arabesque, whose dialectical combination of ornamental and figural forms decisively influenced his visual structure. Equally important was the fact that Audran, as Concierge of the Palais du Luxembourg, gave Watteau access to Rubens's Medici Gallery and thereby laid a crucial foundation for his continuing study of the Flemish painter and other old masters. Watteau's career coincided with the final years of the reign of Louis XIV and the beginning of the Regency, years in which the rigid norms set by the court and the Acade

(; Louvre) is characteristic of his art; it is a delicate, courtly fantasy, represented in warm and shimmering pastel tones that place him among the great colorists of all time. A lyric, Giorgionesque quality pervades his airy, gay, and sensuous scenes, which have a poignancy that none of his followers attained. Out of the most fleeting aspects of life he created an enduring and individual art. His exquisite paintings influenced fashion and garden design in the 18th cent. Jean Antoine Vatto (fr. Jean Antoine Watteau, October 10 (christening day) , Valenciennes - July 10, , Nogent-sur-Marne) - an outstanding French painter and draftsman of the beginning of the XVIII century, the ancestor of the new genre of “gallant festivities” (fetes galantes), which became the prologue for the emergence of rococo style in European art.
Features of the artist Antoine Watteau. He became the first (both in meaning and chronology) the artist of the time, who is called "Gallant century" or, according to the apt expression from a poem by Valery Bryusov, "The age of vanity marquis". Frivolous ladies and their absent-minded gentlemen, melancholic musicians, street vendors and actors - these are the heroes of Watteau, whom he portrays with every possible grace and subtle psychologism, but without a shadow of coarse expose typical of genre painting. The paintings of Watteau are not so much narrative as atmospheric - the mood in them is more important than the plot, the subtext is more important than intrigue, emotion is more important than action. The feeling of the fleeting and short duration of happiness, the hidden sadness makes us talk about "Melancholic realism vat
