The seminal live concert film was lensed on October 28 and 29, at the Santa Monica Civic Center and released theatrically two months later on December After its initial run, it wasn&#;t released again officially until when Shout! Factory issued The T.A.M.I. Show on DVD. But bootlegs and word-of-mouth made it a legend.
The acronym name alternately stands for &#;Teen Age Music International&#; and &#;Teenage Awards Music International.&#; The enthusiastic audience were recruited by handing out tickets at Los Angeles area high schools.
The Rolling Stones were on their first tour of America, and Keith Richards has said that following James Brown was one of the biggest mistakes of their career. After seeing J.B.&#;s taut, dynamic performance backed by the Famous Flames, one can understand why Richards might say that. (Watch them below.)

American &#;60s R&B/soul/funk superstar (and beyond), it&#;s a fact the Godfather of Soul influenced Mick’s stage movements. He preceded the Stones in the taping of the T.A.M.I. Showin Although Brown was the toughest of acts to follow, the Stones were extremely pleased with their performance. Later on, in , Brown was scheduled to open the New York shows for the Stones, but then that didn&#;t happen. A big fan for decades, in Mick Jagger produced Brown&#;s biopic Get On Up, and he was also working on a documentary on “the hardest working man in show business” in the last few years, which still remains unreleased.

James Brown was noted as one of the greatest live performers of all time. Thousands of artists, including Michael Jackson, based their own live performances off of his. A showman like no other, Brown was at his best on stage and there’s no better stage in the world than the one at The Apollo in Harlem, New York. Every music fan should experience a show there at least once. A close second to that, is this album. It feels as if there’re there. You can almost see sweat pouring through the speakers. The crowd is electric and Brown’s band, The Famous Flames is as tight as they come.
Recorded on 24 October , Brown self-funded this live recording. His label, King Records, was opposed to releasing it as they felt that a live album with no new songs would bomb. Brown and his manager manager to convince them otherwise and the result was 66 weeks on the Billboard charts, peaking at #2. In fact, the demand was so great that record stores on the South East of the US had to order multiple cases at a time. This record is brilliant. It’s a masterclass in live performance. Brown’s voice is incredible, but it’s his band the really carry the performance.

One of the most heralded rock events ever captured on film, the concert known as The T.A.M.I. Show [Teenage Awards Music International], filmed in black and white in Southern California by director Steve Binder, presented a lineup like no other: the Rolling Stones, James Brown, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, the Miracles, the Supremes, Chuck Berry, Lesley Gore and others. The artists rehearsed and filmed over two days and nights on October 29 and 30 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. David Winters and Toni Basil served as choreographers.
Aside from the self-contained rock groups (which also included British Invasion stars Gerry and the Pacemakers and Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, plus the American band the Barbarians), all of the performers were backed by a band assembled by musical director Jack Nitzsche. The band included several members of the fabled L.A. session team the Wrecking Crew: Hal Blaine, Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, Don Peake, Barney Kessel and Leon Russell
