Succulents Simplified &#; An Interview with Debra Lee Baldwin

Anyone who knows Debra Lee Baldwin is aware of her extraordinary prowess as an author, writer, photographer, and artist. As a co-contributor at Gardening Gone Wild for 4 plus years, I&#;ve had the good fortune to develop a professional relationship and friendship with her. Not only is Debra Lee all of the above, but she is also a kind and generous individual. In this discussion, she talks about her newly published book, Succulents Simplified ~ it is a work of art. 1. Can you share where your passion for succulents began and how it developed over the years?

I grew up with succulents in dry gardens in Southern CA and never thought of the plants as special. They were what people grew if they couldn’t afford automatic irrigation. If you neglected to hose-water, the succulents usually survived, at least the big, mature ones did&#;agaves, jade and prickly pear were bulletproof. Later, I planted cuttings from my parents’ garden in my own, and succulents proved to be the least trouble. But I was much more enthralled with cannas and roses. Then several things coalesced: the seemingly endless CA drought;

Designing with Succulents

Shelved as 'unfinished'
August 6,
This author was recommended at a workshop I took recently on propagating succulents. I live in the Southeast, and a lot of this book focuses on dry/dessert gardening with cactus and other heat-tolerant plants that thrive in California and Arizona. The pictures are gorgeous to look at, but skimming through, there were only a few pages that seemed relevant to me for outdoor gardening. I’ll probably be limited to containers for most succulents, but I did pick up several varieties of sedum at a gardening show this weekend that will tolerate some shade and cold weather. I also got one or two less hardy varieties to try in pots to add spots of height in the garden that I can move indoors in the winter. My yard is on a hill, and I want to create a rock garden section focused on succulents, perhaps sectioning off varieties with small rock walls. I don’t know if the spot I have in mind will get enough sun, but I do like to experiment, and I have one nearby spot of the expectionallybhardy “Blue Spruce” sedum reflexum that is thriving.

Abstract: Professor Martin’s extraordinary achievements in anthropology have crossed interdisciplinary boundaries to unpack the complexity of human experiences through direct archaeological and osteological analyses, theoretical scholarship, exhaustive publications, and her leadership across disciplines and within her teaching and mentoring. Her research has transformed our understanding how violent events are shaped, used, and experienced by people in the past, highlighting how violence impacts the lives of those on the margins. She is a role model in how to perform engaged, ethical, and forward-moving research. This session celebrates the ways her teaching, mentorship, and collaborative work has impacted her st

Immediately after the Lilac Fire, Dr. Camille Newton of Bonsall, CA, texted me that eight homes on her street had been destroyed, yet hers was unharmed. "Succulents saved the day," she said.

Such reports aren't unprecedented. Suzy Schaefer's succulent garden in Rancho Santa Fe "saved our home," she told me (and national media) after the Witch Creek Fire. (Scroll down to the article in the Los Angeles Times.)

I had heard of others as well. Even so, I was skeptical. True, succulents tend to cook rather than burn and don't transmit flames. But wildfire is so intense it melts metal and glass. What chance does any plant have?

Moreover, wildfires are wind-driven. A barricade of fleshy plants might halt a brush fire, but what about flying, flaming embers? And isn't it possible that what appears to be salvation-by-succulents is merely the capricious way wildfire skips houses?

Even so, Dr. Newton, a geriatrician who often deals with life-and-death situations, is no sensationalist. She was calm, matter-of-fact, and had photos for proof.

Doubtless you know that I'm a big champion of succulents, but what you may not know is I'm also a journalist. I'm aware of how emotion and
